the never ending project. 71 super build

finally got off my lazy ass and filled the carb bowl up with (questionable) gas. turned the key. it cranks just fine, but nothing happened. after doing some checking it has no spark. with the car sitting for about the last 9 months something shit the bed. trying to find resistance for the ignition module (mines showing 4.8). probably should have checked the coil while i was at it... idk the ignition module has crapped out on me before so that's currently my prime suspect.

ok, i got fed up with the "whoop ass stick" (long wood stick i was using to hold the decklid open) so i reinstalled the hood spring. it just barely touches the fan shroud when the lid is fully open. im not going to complain. id rather have that than keep dealing with the whoop ass stick. that thing was starting to piss me off.

any kind of progress is still progress right?

the good news. i did a thing. i bought a riv-nut/nutsert tool and got the breather box mounted.
paranoid about wires behind the tar board (i was extra causious and even partically removed the tar board during the job) i hook the battery up, turned on the ignition and tested all the lights. when i turn the headlights on, it blows the #1 8A fuse. not sure if its related. but yeah, good times.
its 79 degrees with a hot dry wind (Santa Ana winds.) tomorrow its supposed to be 90 with very little wind. im working in the driveway with no shade. so i think im done for the weekend.

well im confused. got fuses. install new fuse. unhook license plate light. hook up battery. turn on ignition. turn on lights. no blown fuse (as expected) turn off ignition. turn off lights. plug in license plate light. turn on ignition. turn on lights. was expecting a blown fuse. nope! license plate light is out (assuming its a bulb, haven't checked). continue to mess with wires jiggling stuff around trying to blow the fuse. nothing. sooooo... why the hell did i blow 3 fuses 2 weeks ago?
i think im still going to replace the license plate light pigtail though. So Cal Imports sells an entire unit for less then $30 and the one that's on the car is off a 76 or 77 bug that was being parted out so probably time to bite the bullet and replace it.

My shot in the dark is a chafed wire grounding out periodically. Have you tried to run along the entire length of the circuit doing the electro-jiggle?

there are 3 wires off that fuse. one goes to each front turn signal (parking lights i think). and one that runs through the main harness from fuse box to a T connector and the T goes to the passenger taillight and license plate light. i don't remember where that T connector is. it has a limited opportunity to chafe. and keep in mind i rewired the entire car in the early 2000's after i painted it so the insulation is still good.

i didn't bother to look but if that circuit has power only when the ignition is on i may have wired the gauges into it. so i may be drawing more amperage from it. but it wasn't an issue over a year ago when i installed them. so idk. im just going to replace the oldest wiring that iv had issues with before. see what happens.
