Some old Bullshit...

August 2015

Made stacked stepped speaker mounting rings for the kick panels out of 4mm plywood...

Then epoxied the plywood rings to the kick panels...

Used foam weather seal tape to center the rings during bonding...

Later the carpet will catch in the gap between speaker grille and kick panel...

Fitting...

Although closely spaced the speaker magnets didn't touch the wheel wells - yay!...

Finally filled, sanded and painted the kick panels...

at first i was thinking you were after more back spacing. then it looks like you go an recess the speakers in. slick!

Yes, that's exactly what I had in mind.
Experimented with some old stock carpet to get an impression how it will turn out...

September 2015

Gutted the passenger side door...

Added some additional wires for the HIFI system before the harness went back in...

Wiring & sound deadening...

Glued the kick panels to the wheel wells using MS Polymer sealant...

Applied butyl sound insulation mats to the battery area...

wow that is a clean wiring in stall!

It's an absolute work of art!

Thank you for the kind words gentlemen!

October 2015

Now to fix the remaining gaps at the upper edges of the kick panels...

Lastly applied a final layer of sealer...

Picked up the seats and stuff from the car upholsterer.
The two-tone combo turned out nice in combination with the new carpet IMHO...

not into how square the seats are, but i do like the grey outline piping. 8-)

November 2015

Pattern for the carpet - in theory...

And to scale... :D

Basic cutting done...

Used the old OEM rubber mats and carpet pieces as templates for further trimming...

In situ trimming, fitting and cursing - clumsy fellow meets cramped confines...

Also fitted the cardboard templates for the rear kick panels...

Applied the last butyl sound insulation mats and fitted the kick panel mounting brackets...

December 2015

Trimmed and fitted the remaining carpet pieces...

Now the carpet bits are waiting for delivery to the upholsterer in order to add bound hems...

Did you buy automotive specific carpet or something else for that? It's looks incredible.

It's "needled carpet" and quite close to the OEM fabric used on the wheel wells of my '71 Super.

I actually used "Finett 10" but this product seems to be no longer available.

Similar stuff is called needle punch carpet in America I guess...

January 2016

Took the footwell vent covers apart...

Replaced the disintegrated foam seals with some felt like material...

Reassembled and cover treated with plastic cleaner & care...

those original? cause (and i could be wrong here) i think they're different than mine and i thought your car was the same year as mine. also i think one of mine is broken...

Yes original.
Part numbers: 111 819 189 B (left), 111 819 190 B (right).

February 2016

Temporary put the rear seat bench in for a little seat belt project...

Added these belt guides...

They prevent the seat belts from rubbing against the seat bench...

The protruding screws will be replaced by proper length (flush) ones later...

Final version...

I used second hand rear seat belt guides from a Passat B3.
Items 4 & 5 in the diagram below...

Tapped the fixing bores for the center console...

Test fitted it with carpet bits as spacers...

March 2016

Made an oil catch out of a skin cream can... :D

Gutted the doors...

Took care of some bits & pieces...

Internals ready to go back in...

Revised the window regulators...

More odds & ends reconditioned...

i can't help but ask why? is there some law about cars dripping oil in Germany? iv heard you guys have really strict inspections every year, or every other year or whatever it is. but damn. this just seems excessive.

Well... Yes excessive...
Not aware of any specific law dealing with dripping cars over here.
But at the biyearly TÜV inspection an oil covered engine and/or gearbox can be a show stopper.
The main reason why I added the catch gimmick was just to avoid wiping the whole engine tin and right hand side of the crankcase since the crankcase vent produces quite a bit of stuff like penetrating oil.
Now I simply clean that catch once in a while.

you ever thought about getting rid of that tube and running a breather box. or is that not legal over there?

Got my first car 40 (sigh) years ago...
