Re: Some old Bullshit...

May 2015

On with sound deadening...
Butyl rubber mats glued to the wheel arches. Again some felt stripes and this time some additional Butyl mats
were added before another layer of bitumen pads went in...
Image

Image

Now to fit that infamous felt cover. The original one tended to totally disintegrate over the years.
The felt I used is latex covered on the top which may increase durability...
Image

Image

Felt like the The Valiant Little Tailor... :D That mat will go back in when adding the new carpet (much) later.
Image

Removed the remaining old carpets an started to scrape the old glue encrustations off...
Image

Image

Damn, that wheel arch looked nasty. Most likely some brake fluid from a former leak at the reservoir found its way
down into the black hole and due to capillary action gnawed at the sealer on the inside... :(
Image

So I took out the wiring harness and peeled off the softened and brittle sealer. Man, there's always something... :x

Image

All the old encrusted glue finally removed...
Image

Wheel arch seam cleared...
Image

After some additional sanding a first layer of primer was put on...

Now for some seam sealer...

Re: Some old Bullshit...

July 2015

Applied a final layer of primer...
Image

Image

Spared the front wheel wells because I wanted to fit the front kick panels first...
Image

Image

Note the cardboard speaker dummy to determine the mounting depth... :D
Image

Image

Primer done...
Image

After some rough reshaping I added cardboard patterns to the kick panels to fill some gaps and then applied
a first layer of fiberglass mats and epoxy...
Image

Image

Final fiberglass/epoxy layer added and sanded down...

That's russet red primer. The final coat will be semigloss black synthetic-resin varnish.

Re: Some old Bullshit...

August 2015

Made stacked stepped speaker mounting rings for the kick panels out of 4mm plywood...
Image

Image

Image

Image

Then epoxied the plywood rings to the kick panels...
Image

Image

Used foam weather seal tape to center the rings during bonding...
Image

Later the carpet will catch in the gap between speaker grille and kick panel...
Image

Fitting...
Image

Image

Although closely spaced the speaker magnets didn't touch the wheel wells - yay!...
Image

Finally filled, sanded and painted the kick panels...

Yes, that's exactly what I had in mind.
Experimented with some old stock carpet to get an impression how it will turn out...
